| February 1, 2012 - Rolling Stone Farm's Sp.Pr.Ca. Ghodiva is the Champion Mare of the 2011 Inspection Season! Rolling Stone Farm had a very successful Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society (GOV) Mare Performance Test in September. A North American record number of mares were presented, and a record number were awarded with the Special and Verbands Premium status. They tested and inspected 10 three year old mares all bred and owned by Mo Swanson of Rolling Stone Farm who now has three more Special Premium Candidate mares, two more Verbands Premium mares, and it was just recently decided that their top mare, Sp.Pr.Ca. Ghodiva, would be the North American Champion Mare and be awarded the 2011 Graf Anton Gunther von Oldenburg award! Ghodiva won the MPT and was awarded with the high score under saddle, high score for free jumping, and was given the Special Premium Candidate title. Ghodiva is sired by Rolling Stone Farm's Elite Hanoverian stallion, Gold Luck (Grundstein I x Annette (Abundance)), and is out of EM Dhominica (De Niro x Rapsodie (Rohdiamant)).
Mo commented that Ghodiva had only been cantering under saddle for about three weeks, and had also only been schooled through the jump chute three times prior to the MPT. She received excellent scores resulting in an overall 7.99 having been given a very rare 9 for trot under saddle, 8.5 for free trot and canter, 8's for the free jump, her canter under saddle, and from the test rider, and a 7 for the walk.

![]() Reserve Champion Dressage Colt Shameless (Stedinger x Baronessa by Day Dream) ![]() Champion Dressage Filly Simone (Sandro Hit x Sp.Pr.Mr. Floradonna by Florestan I) | February 1, 2012 - First Impression and Victorious S are the Foal Champions of the 2011 Inspection Season! North American OHBS Director Holly Simensen reports, "The quality of the top foals was absolutely outstanding in 2011. So much so that there was a very difficult decision to make, with much thought and deliberation. Because the colts were so special this year in the dressage category we decided that we would make one champion and 3 reserve champions. The renowned judge and breeder Hilda Gurney's First Impression by Fürstenball colt had everything you could dream for, and therefore was named the Champion Dressage Colt. Beautiful top line, gorgeous head, correct in his legs and clear in his mind. Gaits could be likened to a 4 legged version of Barishnikov, light, airy and powerful. But just when we thought we had seen the best we inspected 6 more foals that blew us out of the water. Months later after the results were discussed from the entire tour we decided that there were a few other foals that were simply and utterly extraordinary. Hence the victor in each division. Oh what a year!!! And there were even more that were unbelievable. The Champion filly Simone was simply exquisite as was Pasedena. From the jumping foals there were again many outstanding colts and fillies. Branscomb Farm again produced another champion in Sonata BF by Diarado out of their super mare Sonnengirl. KC Kelly thoughtfully pairs her mares up with the best Stallions on offer and as a result stands heads and tails in the lead with so many good foals with outstanding jumping ability and excellent balance and movement. Champion jumping colt was Victorious S by Vallado out of the brilliant mare Vaskaria. This colt was breathtaking and is a superb example of what Oldenburg is looking for in a jumper, and not only is the winner of the colt division but is also a stallion prospect. The lovely Sir Caletto colt bred by Branscomb Farm is also a stallion prospect. We are very proud of all our jumping breeders and feel they have matched our German counterparts in producing outstanding quality." Colts Dressage Fillies Dressage Colts jumping Fillies Jumping |

| January 14, 2012 - Reliance is the 2011 Silver Stirrup Lower Level Dressage Grand Champion Susan Jones is very proud of her accomplishments in 2011 with her Oldenburg gelding, Reliance (Rohdiamant x Gesstine by Classiker). The pair racked up multiple Year-End championships including being the 2011 Silver Stirrup Grand Champion for Adult Amateur First and Second Levels, and the overall Lower Level Dressage Grand Champion! He was also the Reserve Champion AA First Level (9th Open) and third placed AA Second Level (8th Open) in the Adequan USDF/OHBS All Breeds Awards. The pair didn't stop there either. They were also the GAIG USDF Region 2 Adult Amateur First Level championship out of a very large class of 34 horses. Susan commented to The Chronicle of the Horse magazine, "He's just a great showman. He walks out, and he just comes up a whole notch...He's the coolest horse. He lives up to his name, and he's Mr. Reliable out there." Reliance was bred by Oliver Kotschofsky of Germany, and was purchased by Kathy Priest of Kentucky at the 2007 Oldenburg Spring Elite Auction in Vechta. Kathy had tremendous success right away with the 4 year old gelding, and was the Reserve Champion at the 2007 Markel/USEF National Young Horse Championships for the 4 year olds. Susan subsequently bought Reliance from Kathy in 2010, and has been training under Nancy Baker. Susan is clearly very happy with him stating, "As we walk to the arena every morning, I can't help but think I have the honor to ride such a special horse." So a big congratulations to Susan! Carter ![]() 6th Yearling Hunter Breeding True North & Oliver Brown | December 21, 2011 - Oldenburgs are 2011 USEF Sires of the Year, Horses of the Year & Sinsational Fox is USEF Grand Champion It's amazing how time can fly, and as 2011 draws to a close we can look back on an incredible year for Oldenburg breeders, owners, trainers and riders who are being recognized in the Year End Award Programs. The Year End Awards are very special, because they represent an immense amount of dedication and consistency. All of those long drives with the trailer, dealing with the heat, cold, rain and mud, very early wake-up calls, braiding seemingly in the middle of the night, difficult warm-up situations, etc. can be tough to say the least, but our Year End Awardees have all shown they can handle it and come out shining! The USDF National and All-Breeds Awards were reported on this News page on November 1, 2011. Please scroll down to read more about that. The USEF Awards were just locked in, and we are happy to report that not only did Sandro Hit repeat as the USEF Dressage Sire of the Year, many more of our breeders, owners, Oldenburg horses, and Weser-Ems ponies did exceptionally well in the national year end awards. We start off by congratulating our nationally top breeders and owners. In the Leading Dressage Breeders, Mo Swanson of Rolling Stone Farm was ranked 2nd along with being 7th in Dressage Breeding Breeders & 6th in Dressage Breeding Owners. 3rd in Leading Eventing Breeders was Sharon Will who bred the Pan Am Gold Medalist Absolute Liberty. 6th in Leading Hunter Breeders was Nancy Goodman of Colorado, and 2nd in Leading Hunter Breeding Breeders was Meg Sherman of Equistar Farm who bred the USEF National Grand Champion of Hunter Breeding and Champion Hunter Breeding 2 yr. olds, Sinsational Fox (Sinatra Song x Feiner Dance by Feiner Stern) owned by Marcia Heylin! In the Dressage Sire of the Year listings, Sandro Hit (Sandro Song x Loretta by Ramino) repeated his title of Champion. Sandro Hit was bred by Gabriele Harder-Brune of Bramsche, Germany, and is owned by Paul Schockemöhle. Ridden by Ulf Möller, Sandro Hit won the German Bundeschampionate and the World Championships for the 6 year old Dressage horses, and he has proven himself even more as a sire. Even though he is a full generation younger than stallions such as Weltmeyer, Sandro Hit has sired several Licensing champions, 120 State Premium Mares, 11 Bundeschampions, Multiple successful Grand Prix horses, and numerous top auction horses, and that is just in Germany. In the US, he has sired the Grand Prix mare, Sandrina owned by Ann Romney and ridden by Jan Ebeling, the FEI level Oldenburg stallion, Sandomere owned by Holly Reimers and ridden by Merrie Velden, and numerous young horse champions such as Selten HW, Somer Hit, Sabati, and Suntreader. In third place of the Dressage Sires of the Year, we find another Oldenburg stallion, Contango (Contender x Adisa III by Kronprinz xx) who has become renown as a sire thanks in part to his Olympic and World Games Grand Prix son, Ravel ridden by Steffen Peters. Contango was bred by Egon Wichmann and was owned by Iron Spring Farms. Dressage is not the only strong suit of Oldenburg breeding, however. This year, Oldenburgs were at the top of many Hunter and Hunter Breeding divisions. The beautiful mare, Rosalynn (Lanciano x Rendite by Landadel) bred by Erich & Ute Koehler-Wichmann was 8th in the USEF High Performance Working Hunter Horse of the Year standings. Jennifer Wood Media reports on one of their Championship wins at the 2011 Capital Challenge Horse show held in October, "Since Dr. Betsee Parker purchased Rosalynn, Tosh picked up the ride again on the talented nine-year-old Oldenburg mare by Lanciano...This was Rosalynn's and Tosh's second show back together and their second championship of the year. Tosh said, “It’s really good to have her back and going like that. She jumped beautifully and has the Trip of the Show (92) so far. She jumped great in every class.” Tosh believes that her attributes are that “she’s super brave and there’s no spook in her. She truly is a trier.” He added, “We were joking around in the schooling ring because she jumped three jumps, and we knew she was going to go in there and try that hard. She is very scopey and has a huge stride. When she wants to be good, you just get up there and try and get out of her way. She knows what to do.”" In the High Performance Working Hunter 3'-6" to 3'-9", Argentum (Cento x Fortune IV by Camelot) who was sold at the 2006 Spring Elite Auction under the name Cidalgo, was 8th in the national standings under rider Peter Pletcher. The 2001 gelding was bred by Josef Vollmers and was purchased by Alta Basaldua in 2008 after he was imported to the US. Click here to see a video of Argentum and Peter Pletcher. The gelding Lumiere (L'ami x Granesca by Grannus) owned and ridden by Jane Gaston repeated as the Champion of the Amateur Owner Hunter 36+ Years after having a great year. Bred by Bernd Meyer-Siemer, Lumiere has won numerous Amateur Owner Championships such as during the 8th week of the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington. Reporting on that win, Equestrian Sport Productions commented, "Gaston has had Lumiere, or Lou as he is called in the barn, since he was a four-year-old. She has brought him up through the ranks to the competitive horse he is today. The pair has a brilliant partnership that has resulted in numerous championships and awards over the past seasons." Click here to see a video of Lumiere and Jane Gaston. Another Horse of the Year Champion owned by Jane Gaston is the gelding, Clearly (Lordanos x Sella by Sidney) bred by Heinz G. Nipper. Ridden by Kelley Farmer, Clearly won many Championships such as the $20,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby in Michigan, and earned the top spot in the USEF Regular Conformation Hunter standings for 2011. Larry Glefke recommended Clearly to Jane in January commenting to the Chronicle of the Horse, "You don't often get a chance to buy a horse like him. He's as fine an animal as can be; he's the personification of a show hunter." Click here to see a video of Clearly and Kelley Farmer. Oldenburgs do very well for their junior riders as well as the older ones. The gelding, Sanzibar (Sunny Boy x Roxiana by Lanciano) bred by Wilfried Tellman and owned by Alexandra Crown, was the national USEF Junior Hunter Small 15 & Under Horse of the Year. Trained by Scott Stewart, Sanzibar was ridden by Victoria Colvin under his previous owner, Karen Long Dwight to Championship wins such as the Grand Junior Hunter Championship at the Washington International Horse Show in October. Jennifer Wood Media reports that Sanzibar and Colvin were presented the Ides of March Perpetual Trophy at the same show and "Following the presentation of awards, Colvin spoke about her Grand Champion mount, stating, "He is perfect and he has an amazing canter. He is like a couch; you could paint your nails on him." Click here for the full report from Jennifer Wood Media and the video of Sanzibar and Victoria Colvin. Other top Oldenburg Hunters were: Patron (Pilox x Madame Valery by Matador) owned and ridden by Dawn Fogel of Yarmony Creek Sport Horses in Kentucky - 8th in the USEF Amateur Owner Hunter 3'-3" rankings; Banderas (Balou du Rouet x Great Queen by Landkaiser) bred by Alfons Harren, owned by Friday's Farm, and ridden by Tommy Serio - 7th Regular Conformation Hunter; and the formally approved stallion Quarterline who is now the 6 year old gelding, Touchdown (Quattro B x Schila by De Niro) bred by Deckstation Böckmann, owned by Becky Gochman, and ridden by Scott Stewart - 5th Green Conformation Hunter. There was also a Weser-Ems pony in the USEF Year End Hunter Awards. For The Love (Constantin x Agune by Atatürk) bred by August Ellers, and owned and ridden by Alexandra Crown was 4th in the national Green Pony Hunter Large rankings. After her win with him in the Green Pony Hunter Large Model & Under Saddle at the 2011 USEF Pony Finals, Alexandra commented to Phelps Media, "We bought For The Love this winter in Florida, and he is such a good boy. He feels like he is floating when you are cantering on him. During the under saddle, he likes to be left alone; he goes straightforward and points his toes. I know that tomorrow if I am confident and good, then he will be good too." The Grand Champion of the USEF Hunter Breeding for 2011 is the 2 year old Sinsational Fox as mentioned at the beginning of this article above. Oldenburgs also stood out in the Yearling rankings with True North (Cabardino x Hanna by Tavistock) bred and owned by Diana Dodge being 6th and Ooh Ah (Nob Hill x Holy Cow xx by Fire Jade xx) bred and owned by Leslie Pinkerton Nelson being 10th. Both True North and Ooh Ah were honored earlier in the fall in the Sallie B. Wheeler Championships. Ooh Ah was the National Champion and True North was the East Coast Reserve Champion. We congratulate all of these breeders, owners, trainers, and riders and wish everyone all the best in 2012! Keep up the great work! | ![]() 3rd Dressage Sire of the Year Contango & Mary Alice Malone. Photo: Courtesy of Beatriz | November 3, 2011 - Absolute Liberty and Buck Davidson Jr. Strike Team Gold and Ind. Bronze at the 2011 Pan American Games Sharon Will of "Relatively Stable" in Ocala, Florida reports that her feet are still not touching the ground, and that she is "So proud it will make me cry for a few weeks thinking about my little girl. She looked unbelievable." Sharon was on hand at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico as the 8 year old Oldenburg mare that she bred, started, and owns, Absolute Liberty (Aberjack x Chestnut Lady xx (Briartic xx)), put in a great dressage score, blazed around the cross country course, and then carefully put in two clear rounds in the show jumping under trainer and rider Bruce aka "Buck" Davidson Jr.!! Their performance along with a US Team who all finished on their dressage scores (never been done before in history!) earned them a Team Gold and an individual Bronze medal!! The USEF reports, "Immaculate jumping won individual eventing medals at the 2011 Pan American Games - and the top three horses were beautifully ridden over three days...Davidson (Ocala, FL) led the team as the most experienced rider of the five - and he was rewarded for his efforts with his first individual medal. Sixth at the 1999 Pan American Games, Davidson and Sharon Will's 8 year old homebred mare, Absolute Liberty, thrived in Mexico. Davidson knew the team medal was the priority, and the individual honors were just a bonus. They finished on their dressage score of 48.9. "For me and this whole team, our goal was to win Team Gold," said Davidson. "There was more pressure and more joy in winning the Team Gold...It's a great honor to ride for your country...(and about Libby) I'm very excited for Sharon Will who bred her and raised her and thought she was something special, she went through a couple of people, but she landed in my barn and I'm very thankful."" Sharon added that she is truly honored that a great rider like Buck won his first individual medal on her horse. Another story from the Games for Oldenburg was Beatriz Torbay on Don Royal (Donnerhall x Asmara (Argentan)). The pair did not come home with a medal, but considering how recently this horse and rider combination came into being, and that this was their first international championship, the scores they received were more than respectable. Beatriz was representing Venezuela on the gelding that she and her parents bought at the 2011 Spring Elite Auction in Vechta, Germany. After the Prix St. Georges, Beatriz and Don Royal qualified for the Intermediate I, and just missed out on making it to the finals. We are all very certain that we will see much more of these two in the future! Photo: ©Pics of You | November 1, 2011 - We Congratulate our Adequan USDF Oldenburg & Weser-Ems Year End Award Winners for 2011 It's hard to believe that the year has flown by as quickly as it has, but what a great way to start wrapping up 2011. Our Oldenburg horses and Weser-Ems ponies have performed amazingly well in the USDF show season, and the scores and awards show it! We have compiled two PDF files with the first showing all of the Oldenburg horses in the USDF OHBS Adequan All Breeds Awards, and the second with the Weser-Ems ponies and small horses in the USDF Weser-Ems Adequan All Breeds Awards. These files show all of the horses ranked in each division, their score, breeding, breeders, owners, riders, and national ranking (top 100). First, a special congratulation goes out to Juliana Whittenburg of Flying Lion Farm in Ocala, Florida who was 3rd nationally on the list of Dressage Sport Horse Breeding Breeder of the Year! She and her partner Gary Ellebracht earned this distinction with the success of their Oldenburg and Weser-Ems foals and young horses such as Bonofacio FLF, Shamus FLF, Iron League, and Beaujoulais. We have 44 winners to celebrate and congratulate in the various divisions and each of them will be sent a crystal engraved plate from the Hodges Badge Company Inc. acknowleding their wonderful accomplishment. Many of these horses were not just winners for us, but were ranked very highly in the national Horse of the Year standings with the USDF. One of the standouts was of course the recent Grand Prix victor at Dressage at Devon, Wizard (Weltmeyer x Pica (Classiker)) bred Hans Lind of Germany, and owned by Peggy Thomas of Idaho. Wizard and Adrienne Lyle earned a median score of 71.426% in the Open Grand Prix division and a 74.275% in the Grand Prix Musican Freestyle resulting in being ranked 2nd nationally in both divisions just behind Steffen Peters and Ravel! Please scroll down to the Devon report to read more about their story. There were more excellent results in the Open divisions as well. Diamante Farms, Devon Kane, and Olympic rider, Michelle Gibson, must be very proud of the outstanding results of the Oldenburg stallion, Don Angelo (Don Larino x Elektina (Rubinstein I)) who was 5th in the Open Intermediate I with a great median score of 71.053 having been ridden by Michelle and Devon. Another fantastic horse earning a 2nd place nationally in the USDF Adequan Horse of the Year standings was Doc Holliday (Don Cardinale x Rabea (Royal Diamond)) bred by Steffi Becker and owned and ridden by Anne Aloi. Anne and Doc Holliday earned an excellent median score of 70.556% in the Open 4th Level. The mare Saphira (Florencio x Roxina (Chairman) bred by Wolfgang Sames and owned by John McGuire and Marilyn Johnson was outstanding in the Open Second Level division. Ridden by Heather McCarthy she earned a median score of 74.286 which placed her 2nd nationally. She and Heather did not stop there either. They earned a median score of 71.168 and a 5th place nationally in the Open Third Level. John reports that they plan to have Saphira compete next year in the Developing Horse division, and look forward to her winning! Santana (Show Star x Andra (Donnerschwee)) bred by Christin Boekhoff and purchased by Marta Kauffman at the 2010 Winter Mixed Sales auction was also a standout being 4th in the national standings in the Open Training Level division. This comes after a win at the California Dressage Society's Championships which resulted in Santana and his trainer/rider Jaye Cherry being the CDS Open Training Level Horse of the Year. A mare who is continuing to impress the judges is Rock Star (Rubinstein I x Lorance (Donnerhall)) bred by Inke Nolte. Rock Star has moved up to Intermediate I with her rider and owner, Denise Cole, and they are making it look easy having earned a median score of 67.237% and ending up 3rd nationally in the Adult Amateur Intermediate I. Also receiving high accolades in the Adult Amateur divisions, Lucca (Lancer III x Grimke (Domino)) bred by Gestuet Lewitz and owned and ridden by Kelly Robbins put in great performances resulting in a median score of 66.000% and a national 5th place ranking at 4th Level. Jeanne McDonald has been on a roll over the past few years with her horse, Talisman (Tantris x Lucianna (Candidus)) bred by Andrea Parker. Last year, Jeanne and Talisman were top in the nation for Horse of the Year for the Vintage Cup Training Level and 3rd in the Open Training Level. This year they were 3rd in the nation for the Vintage Cup First Level followed directly by Suzanne Galsterer riding her Oldenburg mare, Wroxanne (Wonderful x Lofty View (Lortzing)) bred by Dantia Benson. Suzanne and Wroxanne were 4th nationally in the Vintage Cup First Level division. Also shining brightly in the Vintage Cup divsions was Elizabeth Campbell who rode Royal Diamant (Rohdiamant x Donna (De Niro)) to a 2nd place nationally in the Vintage Cup Prix St. Georges. Royal Diamant was bred by Ludger Wehry and is owned by Elizabeth. This was not the only success story at the FEI levels in the Vintage Cup division, however. Don Sebastian (De Niro x Luca (Sion)) was fourth nationally under his rider and owner Edward Eichelberger in the Vintage Cup Intermediate II. Don Sebastian was bred by Anja Thuemmler. In the Musical Freestyle Division, Power Play (Pik Noir x Feldessa (Top of Class)) ridden and owned by Devon Wycoff came in 3rd nationally at Third Level. Power Play was bred by Walter Boerries. This pair was followed by Riviera (Riverman x High Society (Hill Hawk))and Cassie Schmidt who were 6th in the Musical Freestyle Third Level. Riviera was bred by Christa Witten and is owned by Leslie Schmidt. In the FEI 5 year old Horse division, Biscaya (Johson x Audrey (Argentinus)) ended up 6th nationally after a very successful season which included a Reserve Champion placing at the USEF Markel East Coast Trials and an excellent result in the National Championships as well. Biscaya was bred by Claus Hueppe, is owned by Nancy Holowesko and is trained and ridden by Ulla Parker. Santolina (Sempatico M x Bold Navette (Bold Navy)) bred and ridden by Christine Bergeron and owned by Jessica Wright was 6th in the country in the 3 year old Materiale Mares division. In the 4 & 5 year old Materiale Mares division, Sally Wiley has a lot to smile about. Her mare Gaetessa (Gaudemus) produced two sisters who did very well nationally in this division. Gaetessa's daughter, Rhyme and Reason (Rosenthal) was 5th in the nation and her older sister, Demitessa (De Laurentis) was 12th. Both young mares were ridden by Maria Hallet. De Feiner Star (De Laurentix x Feiner Dance (Feiner Stern)) bred by Elizabeth Dorsett and owned by Greg Strait and Melinda Brown stood out in the 4 & 5 year old Stallions Materiale. Ridden by Christopher Schruefer, De Feiner star was the national Reserve Champion Horse of the Year for the division! He was followed by Don Francisco (Daddy Cool x Leandra (Lafitte)) who placed 6th in this same division. Don Francisco was bred and owned by Carol Dimaggio and Jens Richter and was ridden by three riders: Johanna Constance, Jens Richter, and Craig Stanley for this Materiale placing. Don Francisco was also 2nd nationally in the DSHB Award Mature Horse Stallion. He was one of the many success stories nationally in these Dressage Sport Horse Breeding Divisions. ![]() Oldenburg Breeding Director, Dr. Wolfgang Schulze-Schleppinghoff Photo: Law ![]() Holsteiner Breeding Director, Dr. Thomas Nissan Photo: Law ![]() Professor Dr. Heiner Westendarp of Osnabrück College Photo: Law | October 18, 2011 - Are We Licensing the Wrong Stallions? - A Debate and Discussion Last week, the Breeding Director of the Verband der Zuechter des Oldenburger Pferdes (OL) and Springpferdezucht Verband International (OS), Dr. Schulze-Schleppinghoff, presented his new plan for licensing sport horse stallions. The presentation was given at the Oldenburg Horse Center in Vechta, Germany to approximately 300 people consisting of breeders, stallion owners, veterinarians, and a distinguished panel composed of the following: the Breeding Director of the Holsteiner Verband, Dr. Thomas Nissan; the Breeding Director of the Trakehner Verband, Lars Gehrmann; the Breeding Director of the Hanoverian Verband, Dr. Ludwig Christmann; and the Business Manager of PST Paul Schockemoehle Marketing GmbH, Klaus Roeser. The evening was moderated by the Oldenburg Auction Director, Uwe Heckmann The Oldenburg Verband is celebrating the 150 year anniversary of it's studbook this year, and the 85th anniversary of the establishment of the stallion licensing process. However, Dr. Schulze-Schleppinghoff is now asking the question, "Are we licensing the wrong stallions?" to the sport horse breeding community. In his presentation, he discussed the past success of the current system for licensing stallions not just from Oldenburg, but from all of the German breeding Verbands. There is no doubt that the record in dressage from Hanoverian, Trakehner, and Oldenburg breeding, and in jumping from Holsteiner breeding, has been dominant in the equestrian Olympic sports for decades. However, Dr. Schleppinghoff feels that in order to maintain this position above the recent success from the Netherlands and Belgium and to move forward in keeping up with the demands of the sports, the system for licensing stallions must change, and it must be concentrated more on the performance of the stallions in sport. Therefore, he has developed a new system for licensing young stallions as 3 year olds under saddle. His criticism of the current system stems from a number of problems that he has identified. For the dressage horses in particular, he has tracked and charted the scores for movement given during the licensings where they stallions are presented in-hand and at liberty and those given later under saddle. He has found that the correlation between the two is only 0.5%. For him, this figure is disturbing especially considering the tremendous influence a young stallion can have. At the age of 2 1/2, the stallions being presented for licensing have not been criticized or even seen under saddle, and therefore they can offer a great deal of hope to many breeders. He pointed out that some licensing champion stallions have been bred to literally hundreds of mares not just in Germany, but thanks to massive changes over the past 10 to 20 years in frozen semen technology and transport, they are being bred to hundreds if not over a thousand mares around the world, and he feels that this gives these unproven stallions far too much influence on the breeding. Another problem he is concerned with is the timing of the current licensing system on the physical and mental development of the stallions. Since the pre-selections are held in October, the 2 year old stallions are not turned out in the fields during the summer like the other horses of their same age. They are kept in the training barns and are lunged and free jumped in order to be conditioned and ready for the selections and licensing. Once they are licensed in November, they then begin breeding in early January of their third year which in many cases means they are not even physically three years old. The new system will address all of these issues. The pre-selections will take place in late November of the stallions' second year which will entail a presentation in hand, at liberty, and free jumping. This should mean that the 2 year old stallions can be turned out in summer as usual, and then start with lunging and free jumping when they are brought in for the fall and winter. Those who are rejected can be offered for sale at the Winter Mixed Sales auction in December, be gelded and started under saddle, or can be turned out again the following summer to wait and try again as a 3 year old. Those who are accepted will be asked to do a one day performance test similar to the current mare performance test under saddle in March. After this one day performance test, the group will be narrowed again, and those who make it through will come back in April for the main licensing which will be a presentation in-hand, at liberty, and free jumping. Ideally, Dr. Schleppinghoff would then like the stallions to complete their 30 day performance test following this, and only begin to breed at the end of May of their third year. For anyone who has lived and worked in Germany for any length of time, one thing is always clear; Germans do not make changes easily. Dr. Schleppinghoff's new system met a lot of scrutiny not just from the panel, but from the audience as well. The central themes to the criticism were: the format and timing of the current system is successful, particularly for the jumpers, and should not be changed; the Verbands in Germany should make changes like this in consensus together; the costs to the breeders presenting stallions under saddle will be too high; and that rather than helping the physical development of the young stallions, the requirement for a 3 year old to complete a test under saddle and then a 30 day performance test immediately following could be even more demanding, and therefore detrimental to the welfare of the stallions. The discussions around these central themes were long, detailed, intelligent, and debated amongst the panel members and experts in the audience themselves. After his initial presentation, Dr. Schleppinghoff stayed quiet throughout the entire 2 hour discussion taking notes and listening. He only once took the microphone to address the issue of the welfare of the stallions stating he also personally believes that this issue is essential to the discussion, and is one of the main reasons the timing of the licensing must be changed. He feels the stallions being presented should be more physically mature, and less should be required of them in the early part of their third year with concern to breeding on top of training for presentations and shows. The Oldenburg Verband and OS will go ahead in 2012 with a trial of the one day performance test during the under saddle licensing that normally takes place in March. If this is successful, they will start the new system in the fall of 2012 with the pre-selections in late November followed by the one day test in March of 2013 and the main licensing in-hand in April of 2013. It is safe to say that this new system is not yet widely embraced, but Dr. Schleppinghoff was praised for raising the issue and his willingness to turn his ideas into a realistic trial. There will be a more extensive article written and published about the entire evening which will detail and explain the arguments for and against this new system. It will appear in an upcoming magazine issue of "The Oldenburg Horse and Weser-Ems Pony" which is mailed out to OHBS and Weser-Ems members in North America. We will of course keep you updated about the first trial of the one day test in March, and the ongoing development of this new system. | ![]() Hanoverian Breeding Director, Dr. Ludwig Christmann, and PST Schockemoehle Marketing Business Manager, Klaus Roeser Photo: Law The Discussion Panel L-R: Dr. Thomas Nissen, Lars Gehrmann, Dr. Wolfgang Schulze Schleppinghoff, Uwe Heckmann, Dr. Ludwig Christmann, & Klaus Roeser![]() Gestüt Birkhof Owner & Manager, Thomas Casper Photo: Law |

Photo ©Tammo Ernst | October 1, 2011 - The 75th Anniversary Oldenburg Elite Auction in Vechta, Germany was Di Magical!
The Auction Evening Gala The event started off on Friday evening with a fantastic Gala that featured top sport and auction horses intermingled with fun filled acts. There was also a surprise during the Gala for the President of the Oldenburg Verband, Wilhelm Weerda. The Board of Directors of the Verband decided to use this 75th Anniversary of their Elite Auctions and 150th Anniversary of their stud books to award President Weerda with the golden pin of the Verband der Züchter des Oldenburger Pferdes for his exceptional and long service to the Verband. Along with this award he was also presented with the Silver Gustav-Rau Medal from the German Riding Federation (FN) for the 10 years he has served on the Board of Directors for the Verband. During his time as President he oversaw the building of the modern Oldenburg Horse Center in Vechta, the integration of the Elite Mare Show in Rastede with the Oldenburg State Championships, and the partnership with the Weser-Ems Breeding Society. His largest accomplishment, however, was the founding of the Oldenburger Springpferdzuchtverbandes-International (OS) which he had to fight for against resistance from the FN. He has also been a force behind the recent founding of the roof Verband, the Oldenburger Pferdezuchtverband e.V., which will oversee the OL and OS together. His presidency has led the Oldenburg Verband forward, and his contribution is evidenced by the growth of membership and the success of the Oldenburg horses. The evening Gala also featured the presentation of the 2011 Bundeschampion of the 5 year old Dressage Horses, Fürstenball, along with his dam and granddam, St.Pr./El.St. Maradonna (Donnerhall) and St.Pr./El.St. Marella (Classiker x Maureen (Weltmeister)) owned by Georg Sieverding of Emstek, Germany. Fuerstenball's half brother, Harmony's Desiderio (Dimaggio x St.Pr.St. Maradonna (Donnerhall)) owned by Harmony Sporthorses in the US came out as well to show how strong this mare line is. Another excellent Oldenburg mare line was then featured when we were treated to a performance from Rubin Royal (Rohdiamant x El.St. Rumirell (Grundstein II) who comes from the mare line of Rudilore. Click here for the Gala Highlights Part 1 video. The Reserve Champion of the 2011 Bundeschampionate 3 year old Mares and Geldings, Stern von Afrika (San Amour x Hanseatin (Harvard)) was breathtaking, as was the stallion Royal Doruto (Royal Hit x Ballerina (Rubinstein I)). After that we had some fun watching Der Flucht der Karibik - a frisbee show with some very fast and sharp catchers! The top mares from the 2011 Elite Mare show in Rastede were also presented and honored. The champion of the OL Brilliant Ring, St.Pr.A. Fire and Ice (De Niro x St.Pr.St. Free Life (Lord Liberty)) came out as did the top three OS mares, St.Pr.A. Contessa (Canturo x El.St. D-Cremona (Corrado I)), St.Pr.A Queentina (Coupe de Coeur x St.Pr. Quadriga (Quidam's Rubin)), and St.Pr.A. Shiva Nova (Stalypso x Nora (Lennon)). Click here for the Gala Highlights Part 2 video. The success of the 10 year old OS was also celebrated with the 2011 Bundeschampions of the 5 and 6 year old Jumpers, Cornet's Balou (Cornet Obolensky x Georgia (Continue)) and Toulouse (Toulon x Galatee (Ganymed)) were presented along with the silver medalist of the FEI World Championships for the Young Jumper Horses in the 5 year old Division, Cafe's Champus (Cafe au lait x Chamba Wumba (Calido)), and his sire, the 2003 Champion of the OS Licensing, Cafe au lait (Contender x Diamila (Diadem)). Later, the 2010 OS Licensing Champion, Coupe d'Or (Coupe de Coeur x rivera (Rivero xx)) was brought out with his Holsteiner sire, Coupe de Coeur (Calido x Adele (Lincoln)) and were honored along side Sandra Auffahrt who comes from a long time Oldenburg breeding family. Sandra recently won the silver medal at the 2011 European Championships in eventing on her Selle Francais gelding, Opgun Luovo. While the auction crew was setting up the jumps for the auction horses, we were treated to a fun demonstration of High School dressage in hand from Franz-Josef Dahlmann and his shetland pony, Chintan. Click here for the Gala Highlights Part 3 video. This was followed up by an exciting auction team Formula 1 Race right in the auction hall, and a the Reitverein Hesel's Zirkus Zirkus! Grammy nominated DJ Paul van Dyk composed an excellent mix for his wife Natascha and her Oldenburg horse, Dream of Gold (Dream of Glory x St.Pr. Okanja (Waikato)). Click here for the Gala Highlights Part 4 video. Closing out the evening were the final auction canidates and the two time World Champion of the Young Dressage Horses, Astrix (Obelisk x Upshot (Olivi)), ridden for the Netherlands by Emmelie Scholtens. Click here for the Gala Highlights Part 5 video. The Auction On Saturday, everyone was in a great mood thanks to the excitement about the horses and foals being offered, not to mention the summer weather with temps in the high 70's and a clear and sunny sky! The top priced horse was the licensed stallion, Di Magic (Dimaggio x St.Pr.St. Ferodie (Rohdiamant)) who has won 4 year old classes under saddle with his exceptional rideability and strong movement. After a bidding duel with Switzerland, he sold to Grand Prix Dressage rider, Bernadette Brune of Monaco for 250,000 Euro! This long time client of the Oldenburg auctions was elated when she won the bid for the beautiful black stallion bred by Christian Niemann and owned by Andreas Wempe. Click here to see #6 Di Magic. The mare, Tausendundeine Nacht (Don Schufro x St.Pr.St. Tonella II (Rubinstein I)), was a head turner from the start. Her registered name is St.Pr.St. Taiga, and in her Mare Performance Test she scored an incredible overall score of 8.16 which included a perfect 10 for rideability. Bred and owned by Heinrich Themann, she was a finalist in the 2009 Brilliant ring and in 2010 had a filly by San Amour. At the evening Gala on Friday she and her full sister, St.Pr.St. Traversale T, put on a wonderful performance with Traversale showing off her S Level series winning ability. After a three way bidding fight between Germany, Swizterland, and Australia, the auctioneer, Uwe Heckmann, knocked the hammer down for Australia for the amount of 160,000 Euro. The beautiful mare will be staying in Germany in training with Kira Wulferding. Click here to see #1 Tausendundeine Nacht and her sister, Traversale OLD in the Evening Gala. Click here to see #1 Tausendundeine Nacht in the auction. When the North American director of the OHBS, Holly Simensen, watched the jumpers offered in this auction she said, "Tell everyone that these OS horses are jumping like freaks!" She was extraordinarily impressed with their ability not only over the jumps, but also in their gaits and overall athleticism, and clearly so was everyone else. The third highest priced horse of the auction was the licensed jumping stallion, N'oubliez Jamais (Nintender x Lady Capriola (Calido)) who was fought over until the hammer fell in favor the training center of Lee AG in Switzerland for 150,000 Euro! The 5 year old stallion bred by the international jumping rider, Jürgen Ernst, has won many young jumper classes, and was ranked 2nd in an M Level class on top of many other high placings. He was also qualified for the 5 year old jumpers at the 2011 Bundeschampionate with an overall score of 8.4. Click here to see #8 N'oubliez jamais. One of the dressage horses headed for the US is thanks to the great work of Stefanie Gribbe, the sister of the international Grand Prix rider and current Canadian Dressage Team coach, Markus Gribbe, who was busy training with the Canadian Pan Am Games Team in New York during this auction. Stefanie helped clients in Germany as well as the US, and a few were on hand with her at the auction from California and had a great time. The horse was #46 Scooter (San Schufro x Desire (Fürst Heinrich)) who is stunning and has an excellent expression and uphill balance in his gaits. Another wonderful dressage horse that will be headed to California thanks to Viola Abrams is #47 St.Pr.A. Sunshine Tour (Sir Donnerhall I x El.St. History (Alabaster)) who is elegant and moved effortlessly. Click here to see #47 St.Pr.A. Sunshine Tour. Presented alongside the outstanding horses under saddle were the Elite Foals who were just as exceptional. The top selling foal was #87 Dans d'Ecole (Danone x St.Pr.St. Rihanna (Welt Hit II)) who was presented in the evening Gala alongside his full brother, Dante Weltino, who was the reserve champion of the 2009 Oldenburg Licensing. The colt bred by Olaf Bahls sold to the German dressage rider Ulf König. Click here to see Dante Weltino and #87 Dans d' Ecole. The second highest priced foal of the auction was the beautifully expressive and elastic filly Totima (Totilas x Sundance Kid (Sandro Hit) who had the shoulder freedom of her famous father. Bred by van Son & Tenhof of the Netherlands, the beautiful black filly was purchased by Lone Boegh Hendrikson of Denmark with the help of Johannes Westendarp. Click here to see #69 Totima. Future Ace(Floriscount x Frieda (Dormello)) bred by Ann Kitchel of Vermont earned his Premium status and was named a Stallion Prospect by the Oldenburg Breeding Committee. Gracious and Jason Berry Photo: Action Shots Photography | September 21, 2011 - Golan's Daughter, Gracious, Debuts Successfully as a Hunter & Rio Mio Qualifies for Harrisburg Barbara Carry of Gift Hill Farm has two reasons to celebrate this week! The four year old mare that she bred, Gracious (Golan x Dutch Vivacious xx (He's Vivacious xx)), debuted very successfully, and the gelding Barbara bred, Rio Mio (Rio Grande x Joyeaux (Jupiter)), has qualified for Harrisburg in the Pre-Greens! Born in 1976, the Oldenburg stallion, Golan (Goya x Orsetta (Ferdinand)) became one of the most successful jumpers of his day. He was the 5 year old European Horse of the Year, and was short listed for the 1984 German Olympic Team. He was sold to Rodney Jenkins, and subsequently Sale Johnson who put the horse under Michael Matz. In Florida, he was the WEF Regular Conformation Florida Circuit Champion, and was successful in Grand Prix jumping, Open Speed, Derby, and many other jumper divisions. Because of his tremendous success, you can find him on our "Legends in Sport" page. In 2006, Barbara decided to breed her Thoroughbred mare, Dutch Vivacious xx (He's Vivacious xx x Dutch Trim xx (Fire At Will xx)) who was herself a successful jumper stemming from three generations of 1.2 m - 1.4 m jumper mares. The result was the filly, Gracious, who is now 4 years old and just debuted in her first show. Gracious is now owned by Patricia Michael who has placed her in training with Jason Berry. Jason and Gracious went to the Bridgewater Horse Show in Virginia and the pair placed second in a very competitive group which included older horses! Patricia also owns Gracious' full younger sister, Gigi, who they have high hopes for. In addition, Barbara happily reports that she is expecting another Golan foal for 2012. Barbara is also very excited about the Oldenburg gelding she bred, Rio Mio who has been cleaning up in the Pre-Green 3' 3" championships this year. It was just announced that he has qualified for the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg which is one of the largest indoor horses shows in the United States and was recently named the Horse Show of the Year by the National Show Hunter Hall of Fame. It will be held October 13th through the 22nd, so we will keep our thumbs pressed and fingers crossed for Rio Mio, his rider, Sarah Young, and owner, Lynn Cunningham!!

| September 19, 2011 - San Andreas Overcomes All Odds and is Winning in the Dressage Shows In an article previously published in the "Oldenburg Horse and Weser-Ems Pony" magazine, Holly Kovach of Iron Horse Farm wrote, "I was told that his chances of survival were 50/50 at best, but I wouldn't know until later that the other vets in the clinic had encouraged Dr. Zimmerman to euthanize the colt so that he wouldn't suffer. With tears streaming down my face I told Dr. Zimmerman to keep going "don't let him die" I said, "He doesn't even have a name yet."" Holly would later name him San Andreas at the Oldenburg inspection where he received a premium award after only being home from the vet clinic for a short time. She recalls, "I realized that tears were streaming down my face when San Andreas' Premium Foal plaque was handed to me. I clutched it to my chest, his purple heart, his medal of honor. This foal that had never needed to prove his premium status to me, had now shown the world." San Andreas (Sure Hit x Stella De Oro (Juventis)) is now five years old and is proving himself again in the show arena with his new owner and rider, Barbara Tuskas of Hinckley, Ohio. Barbara and San Andreas had very good results in May at the Lake Erie College 2011 Prix De Ville, and over the summer they continued to improve. At the WPDA Summer Sizzler at Grand Haven in August he won the Training Level Test 2 with a 67.857% and was second in the Training Level Test 3 with a 64.800%! Sadly, Holly lost San Andrea's dam, Stella de Oro, the following year in 2007, but San Andrea's recovery from massive infection which was a result of a Patent Urachus, a birth defect where there is a opening between the bladder and the umbilicus, has given her the strength to keep breeding. She comments, "I had a lot of years with very good luck and then two years in a row where I lost the mare and the foal. Unbelievably hard and makes you want to throw in the towel. But a foal like Andre, who defies the odds and lives up to his breeding (and gets a talented and devoted owner) can erase a lot of heartache!" So we congratulate Holly and Barbara on all of the success. We definitely look forward to more from San Andreas! | |

She told the USEF reporter, Stephanie Doyle, "I really didn't think this day would ever come. I was in such a state of shock." Leslie went on to describe Ooh Ah, "She is without a doubt the quietest, nicest, most uncomplicated filly. She's just really simple." Ooh Ah is sired by Nob Hill (Duke of Riva x Playa Rienta xx (Castle Magic xx)), a stallion bred and owned by Diana Dodge of Nokomis Farm in Virginia. The Bundeschampionate is the annual German national championships for the young horses in the disciplines of Dressage, Jumping, Driving and Eventing. Many Oldenburgs brought home medals, and one of the most outstanding was the stallion, Fürstenball OLD who was astounding winning the 5 year old Dressage Horses with an incredible overall score of 9.4!! The Springzuchtverband Oldenburg-International (OS) also got a great 10th anniversary present with the sweep of the young jumper classes! The OS mare, Toulouse ridden by Hendrik von Eckermann won the 6 year old Jumpers and the OS stallion, Cornet's Balou, ridden by Patrick Stuehlmeyer won the 5 year olds! Elite Foal & Licensing Champion Fürstenball OLD In the dressage stadium, Fürstenball OLD (Fürst Heinrich x St.Pr./El.St. Maradonna (Donnerhall)) bred by Georg Sieverding and owned by Lone Boerg Hendriksen and Paul Schockemoehle stayed focused in the pouring rain and put in a beautifully harmonious ride under Ines Westendarp. The judges were ecstatic as the sun came out during Ines' last salute, and gave the stunning stallion a perfect 10 for his walk which they said was absolutely 100% certain in it's rhythm an simply could not be better! They went on to give him a 9.5 for his trot saying it was impressive with an active hind leg that stepped will under the center of gravity, and was clearly balanced. He got a 9.0 for his canter with a note from the judges that it would have been higher had the medium canters shown a little more difference, but they understood Ines wanting to ride a little more conservatively given the circumstances of the pouring rain. They complimented the canter saying it had a good uphill tendency with a good jump through in the stride and was ground covering. For the throughness, which they consider rideability to be a part of, they gave him a 9.0 and finished with an outstanding 9.5 for general impression. This resulted in the highest score of the day of 9.4, the gold medal and title of Bundeschampion! In an interview following the win, Ines remarked, "Fürstenball is really a dream! I've never ridden or worked with a horse like this, and I am so thankful to Lone Boegh Hendriksen and Paul Schockemoehle for this opportunity." She explained to the commentator that Lone purchased Fürstenball OLD at the 2006 Elite Foal auction and then placed him with Ines' husband, Johannes. He was raised at their farm in Osnabrück, and Johannes prepared and presented him for the 2008 Oldenburg Stallion Licensing where Fürstenball was crowned champion. Ines went on to say that Fürstenball of course has a busy job as a top breeding stallion which makes the training more complex, but they will take it easy during the winter, and should be ready for the 6 year old classes next year. His owner Lone summed it all up when she remarked, "I was in love with him from the first moment I saw him, and I still am!" The OS Sweeps with Toulouse and Cornet's Balou The excitement in the dressage arena on Sunday spilled over to the packed jumper arena where they finals for the 6 year old jumpers were being wrapped up. Out of an enormous field the 36 finalists were judged on their form and way of going through the course. Once this was completed, the top 10 were invited into a jump off that was based only on speed and faults. Amongst these top 10 was the OS mare, Toulouse (Toulon x Galatee (Ganymed)) bred by Gestuet Lewitz and owned by B & S Sportpferde GmbH. The mare had earned an excellent score of 8.7 from the judges who remarked that rider Hendrik von Eckermann had presented a very good round with the mare that was through and rhythmical. In the jump off the mare showed even more of what she had under the hood blazing down the long lines, and not missing a beat as she took the sharp turns and jumps completely in stride! She put in a clear round with a time of 41.24 that no one could match and was a full 1.7 seconds ahead of the second placed horse! The typically composed Hendrik exclaimed, "The strength of Toulouse is her character. She is always with me and fights for the rider." Toulouse is out of the mare Galatee who was internationally successful in the Grand Prix jumper arenas under Ludgar Beerbaum. This was not the only victory for the 10 year old Springzuchtverband Oldenburg-International (OS) either. Earlier on Sunday, the Oldenburg stallion Cornet's Balou (Cornet Obolensky x Georgia (Continue)) won the 5 year old jumpers under rider Patrick Stuehlmeyer with an incredible total score of 18.1! Unlike the finals of the six year olds, the five year olds do two judged rounds in the finals. After his first round, the judges were ecstatic over the stallion who is out of the same dam as Balou du Rouet. They exclaimed, "Unbelievable potential in this stallion. He is the complete package who is really on the way!". He received the highest score of 9.1. In his second round, he was again rhythmical and fluid showing fantastic ability over the jumps. After he crossed the finish line the judges told Patrick, "Keep going!", and gave him a 9.0 which gave him the gold medal and the title of Bundeschampion! Cornet's Balou was bred by and is owned by Paul Schockemoehle's Gestuet Lewitz. Paul is the President of the young OS Verband and he is thrilled with the results commenting, "It's a pleasant surprise and the evidence that our breeding philosophy is correct. As a relatively small Verband, we have played a large roll here at the Bundeschampionate." Oldenburg Medal Winners These three great champions were not the only success stories at the Bundeschampionate for Oldenburg. In the 3 year old Mares and Geldings division the incredibly impressive gelding, Stern von Afrika OLD (San Amour x Harvard), bred and owned by Tammo Francksen was the silver medalist! The Oldenburg State Champion earned excellent scores under rider Andrea Müller-Kersten. They received straight 9.0's for their trot, canter, walk, training and presentation and an 8.5 for his conformation. Later in the afternoon the Guest riders awarded him a fantastic total score of 18.50 out of a possible total 20.0, and that made him the Rerserve Champion! In the 3 year old stallions, it was the Oldenburg stallion Daktylius OLD (ridden by the Oldenburg Deputy Breeding Director Katrin Burger who stood out and received the bronze medal! The expressive yet quiet stallion was bred by Clemens Ortmann and was sold to Anna von Staff-Reitzenstein at the 2008 Elite Foal Auction. On Sunday, he earned an 8.5 for trot, 9.5 canter, 8.0 walk, 8.5 training, 9.0 conformation, and 9.0 for presentation. In the afternoon the guest riders gave him a very good score of 17.0 which resulted in the third place position! Sir Caramello and Supremat Two stallions that performed beautifully in the qualifiers and were favorites for the finals unfortunately had to scratch. Sir Caramello OLD (Sir Donnerhall x Feiner Stern) ridden by Eva Möller was very close to the leader in the qualifiers having earned straight 8.5's across the board and ending up in third. Unfortunately, Eva was injured the next day and could not ride in the Finals. We are happy to report that she is on the mend and should be fine. One of the more impressive young stallions on the scene was for sure the 3 year old Supremat (Sandro Hit x Rubinstein I) bred by Stall Troff and purchased by Jason Canton and Julia Martin of Alpharetta, Georgia at the 2011 Spring Elite Auction in Vechta. Ridden by Johannes Westendarp, Supremat received excellent scores of 8.5 for trot, 9.0 canter, 8.0 walk, 8.5 training, 9.0 conformation, and 9.0 presentation resulting in a second place finish with an overall score of 8.67! Again, unfortunately, the finals were not meant to be. The weather in Warendorf was horrible with Friday and Saturday having temperatures in the 90's and then a storm and cold wave coming through on Sunday, the day of the finals. Supremat came down with a fever, and Johannes rightly decided to scratch and let him rest and recover. He will be fine, and we can't wait to see how this stallion develops in the future! Weser-Ems Champions The breeding director of the Weser-Ems Breeding Society, Mareile Oellrich, was gleaming with pride over the outstanding results of the Weser-Ems ponies at the Bundeschampionate! One of the most outstanding was the 3 year old stallion Caramel WE (Cyriac WE x Golden Dasher) bred by Heino Punke and owned by Christina Kruse. Ridden by Andrea Müller-Kersten the superstar scored a perfect 10 for his canter! In addition he had an 8.5 trot, 9.0 walk, 8.5 training, 9.0 conformation, and 9.0 for presentation resulting in the gold medal! The judges commented that Caramel WE is clearly a pony with a lot of self confidence. He is beautifully balanced and through in all of his gaits, and with his canter, they unanimously said they could not wish for more. He is a pony with a great deal of potential for the future! The other champion from the dressage arena was Mad Max WE (The Braes My Mobility x Sandro Hit) who won the 5 year old Dressage Ponies under rider Anna-Lisa Theile. Mad Max WE bred by Elisabeth van Hoorn and owned by Hannes Theile was outstanding scoring 9.0's for his trot and canter resulting in an overall 8.2 and the gold medal! Weser-Ems ponies are not only talented in dressage, they have been known to win in the jumper arena many times at the Bundeschampionate, and this year was no exception. Crack-P WE (Charivari x Gracieux) ridden by Jaqueline Bührmann scored an excellent 8.5 in the final round and took home a gold medal as well! Crack-P WE was bred and is owned by Sven Pfleumer. The foal's breeder and owner, Klaus Tuchan of Grabow, Germany looked as if he was in disbelief when he came out and was congratulated by President Weerda, Uwe, and auction manager, Thomas Rhinow. His daughter then took a very happy victory lap with the colt and his embryo transfer dam! His real dam is St.Pr.St. Samira (Sandro Hit) is out of St.Pr./El.St. Rosanna (Donnerhall x St.Pr./El.St. Rosalie (Rubinstein I)) who is a full sister of the approved stallion, Dressage Royal, and is the dam of two Elite Auction foals, Floridabel and Fernando. Many other top level dressage horses and auction foals were produced from this mare line. Click here to see the video of A La Dressage! A La Dressage was not the only highly priced foal either. #36 Tout Le Monde (Totilas x Roxana Ra (Rohdiamant)) sold for an amazing 90,000 Euro! A new client from Hannover, Germany was elated when she won the bid for him. His dam's sister, Ronda-Ra is winning at S level in Germany under Leonie Bramall. Many stallions stem from this dam line such as Con Amore, Morning Star, Marquis, Saluto, Sarasto, and Gina Cappellmann's successful Grand Prix horse, Weinbrand. Click here for the video of Tout Le Monde! The refined and expressive colt, #4 Rock of Ages (Rock Forever x Fontania (Sevillano xx)) also turned heads in the presentation outside, and had the bidders fighting hard for him. His sire, Rock Forever, is winning now at Prix St. Georges, and the sister of this colt's dam, Fontania Rioja, was successful up to Grand Prix. The hammer went down for a bidder from the Niedersachsen region of Germany. Click here for the video of Rock of Ages. Another highly desired colt was #84 Dante Ferro (Dante Weltino x Finesse (Ferro)) who stems from an excellent mare line. The Bundeschampion Fuerst Fugger and many stallions stem from his mare line as well as the successful S Level dressage horses Royal Gala and Rubirando. Having the Olympic Grand Prix stallion Ferro and the internationally successful Grand Prix stallion, Rohdiamant in his lines was certainly another factor in how beautiful this colt turned out. He will also be staying in Germany. Click here for the video of #84 Dante Ferro. The top priced filly was the exceptional mover, #79 Feldgedicht (Quaterback x Feldstern (Stedinger)). She is a full sister to the outstanding colt from the 2009 Elite Foal Auction, Quadrivio, who sold to Sissi Max-Theurer. Their great-granddam Feldblume was the dam of No Limit who won at Grand Prix in dressage under Sandy Phillips and Hubertus Schmidt. The hammer went down in favor of a buyer from the Bavarian region of Germany. Click here for the video of #79 Feldgedicht. An enormous part of the US and Canada was sadly distracted from this fun auction due to Hurricane Irene. We wish everyone that was in the path of this storm all the best, and hope that you are all safe and sound! Those on the west coast of the US were on hand, however, and KC Branscomb Kelley of Branscomb Farm in California was thrilled with winning the bid for the stunning filly, #74 Charlene (Corlensky G x Chandra (Landor S)). Her granddam, Chanel (Cor de la Bryere) won at S Level in international competitions herself, and this mare line produced the stallions Caballero, Casco, Ladas, Le Vainqueur and Leon Cavallo. Click here for the video of #74 Charlene. Aside from the Germans who were strongly represented, the international audience in Vechta was very active. Auction manager, Thomas Rhinow, commented, "We were very pleased with the extraordinary amount of international clients who understood the first rate quality of our foals. Twenty eight foals found new owners over the German borders in countries like Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovania, Great Britain, Australia, Italy, and the USA." Even more so, many jumping loving Russians purchased some fantastic foals that will be heading for Moscow thanks to our new Auction Sales Director for the jumpers, Fabian Kühl. Donna Tella was bred by Heinrich Gerriets and was sold under the name Dei Gratia at the 2010 Oldenburg Summer Mixed Sales Auction in Vechta, Germany. She remained in Europe and was purchased by Hampton Meadows Farm of Wellington, Florida with the help of their trainer and rider, Werner van den Brande of Belgium this past November. Donna Tella's dam, Gesa is a full sister of the sire Grundstein's Erbe, an enormously successful, international show jumper ridden by Gerco Schroeder, NL, under the name of Eurocommerce Rome. Also stemming from this line are the successful stallions, Weissherbst, Griseldi, Landkoenig, and Feingau, not to mention the 2009 Summer Mixed Sales Auction top priced selling horse, Fuerst von Jever. Donna Tella was not the only success story at these championships for Oldenburg and the Oldenburg Auctions in Vechta either. Sp.Pr.Mr. Biscaya (Johnson x Audrey (Argentinus)), bred by Claus Hueppe and sold to Nancy Holowesko of Crosiadore Farm at the 2006 Fall Elite Auction as an Elite Foal, earned excellent scores and placed 5th overall! Trained and ridden by Ulla Parker, Biscaya was awarded with the 2010 Graf Anton Gunther von Oldenburg Award for being the Champion mare of the 2010 Inspection season. Also placing in the top 10 was Belvedere owned by Judy Wheatley of San Diego, California, and ridden by Ignacio Moran. Riding the mare, Horizon (Hotline x Revue (Don Schufro)) bred by Franz Grote, George Williams impressed everyone in attendance and was the Reserve National Champion!! Horizon is owned by Elizabeth Juliano of Havensafe Farm in Ohio. The third placed horse, Regalo (Rosario x Dandiell (Nandino)) owned by Pinky Roberts of San Diego, California was also very impressive! He was bred by Ullrich Henschke who serves as a member of the Oldenburg Breeding Evaluation Committee which is responsible for licensing stallions, judging the mare performance tests, and helping to guide the breeding program for Oldenburg in general. Ridden by Lientje Schueler, the young gelding showed off an excellent walk and earned an overall score of 8.3! Click here to read the full report about the 4 year old Championships from Dressage Daily. Oldenburgs were also very successful in the 6 yr. old Division. Sabati (Sandro Hit x Rosalea (Rubinstein I)) bred and owned by Nancy Holowesko came out with an excellent result in the Final Test scoring an incredible 85%! This ranked him 4th in the Final Test and 7th overall! Nancy reports that she was thrilled when his trainer and rider, Ulla Parker, called her in Maryland to tell her about how well he did in the Finals. She commented that she was disappointed that she had to miss the test because of Hurricane Irene and that Sabati always, "does a decent test the first day, and the second day, he is spot on. So proud of Ulla and my special boy!" Nancy did let us know that she and her horses are all ok. We certainly hope everyone else in the path of that storm can report the same! Another top ten finisher in the 6 yr. old Division for Oldenburg was Somerhall (Sir Donnerhall x Arantscha B (Archipel)) bred by Theo Berkemeier and ridden and owned by Ashley Wimmer. Ashley and Somerhall did very well scoring a 77% in the Preliminary Test and a great 80% in the Finals and finished 10th overall. In the Developing Horse Division, the Oldenburg mare Jil Sander (Don Larino x Jaqueline (Hohenstein)) bred by Marlene Bruhnken-Siebolds put in consistently great performances scoring a 67.105% in the Preliminary Test, and a 67.255% in the Final Test resulting in an overall 5th place! She was ridden and is owned by Alyssa Pitts of Snomish, Washington. Dressage Daily reports that, "Pitts made a breakthrough in her career after being invited to the USEF Talent Search with Debbie McDonald and the USEF Elite Rider Clinic with Morten Thomsen in 2010 with her Developing Horse Jil Sander." Two other notables in the Developing Horse Division were Cleopatra and Sandro Paix who finished 10th and 11th respectively. The mare, Cleopatra, was ridden by George Williams and is owned by Elizabeth Juliano of Havensafe Farms in Ohio who also owns the Reserve Champion of the 4 year olds, Horizon. The 7 year old gelding, Sandro Paix (Sandro Hit x St.Pr.St. Ariyola (Absatz)) bred by Rolf-Peter Schulze and purchased by Sandi Chohany at the 2007 Oldenburg Fall Elite Auction, has been doing extremely well for Sandi and her student, Heather McCarthy. He was the 2010 USDF 2nd Level Horse of the Year nationally, and in 2011 he has earned excellent scores at Prix St. Georges and in the Developing Horse classes. In June, he and Heather earned scores of 71%, 72%, and 76% at the IDCTA Summer Kick-Off Show at Lamplight! Sandi comments, "He is truly a wonderful horse." The USEF has posted the official lists of young dressage horses who have qualified for the Markel USEF Young Horse National Championships, and four Oldenburgs are headed to the Lamplight Equestrian center to attend! In the 5 year old division, Sp.Pr.Mr. Biscaya (Johnson x Audrey (Argentinus)) bred by Claus Hueppe, and purchased by Nancy Holowesko of Crosiadore Farm at the 2006 Fall Elite Auction as an Elite Foal, will be making the trip. At the Markel USEF East Coast Trials, Biscaya was the Reserve Champion, and automatically qualified due to her placing and excellent overall score of 7.996! Placing just behind her at the same trials, and also automatically qualifying was Folkestone. Folkestone (Fidertanz x El.St. Katullika (Rubinstein I)) was one of the stars of the 2010 Spring Elite Auction where he was purchased by Christina Vinios who rode him to this excellent result of placing third in the trials with an overall score of 7.932! Another Oldenburg in the 5 year old Division that will be headed for Lamplight is Belvedere bred by Irene Bayer. He was purchased at the 2009 Oldenburg Fall Elite Auction and imported to the US where he was later bought by Judy Wheatley. Belvedere (Biotop x White Drogida (Duntroon)) stems from the excellent mare line of Faschingswerk which produced the sires Gardeulan I and II, as well as Grandus. Ridden by Ignacio Moran, Belvedere was ranked 17th nationally with a score of 7.750. Judy received word from the USEF that the pair has been invited to compete at the National Championships, and she is very excited about the upcoming trip commenting, "He is my first Oldenburg and a true credit to his breed!" In the 6 year old division, Royal Coeur, ridden by Marne Martin-Tucker was also automatically qualified for the championships with an outstanding score of 8.36 earned in England, but because Marne focused on the World Championships just held in Verden, Germany she will not be making the trip to Lamplight.Somerhall ridden and owned by Ashley Wimmer qualified by ranking 11th in the nation with a score of 7.840! Somerhall (Sir Donnerhall x Arantscha B (Archipel)) was bred by Theo Berkemeier in Germany and was imported by Ashley who is now training and riding her. The Oldenburg gelding, Sabati (Sandro Hit x Rosalea (Rubinstein I)) bred and owned by Nancy Holowesko will also be headed to the Championships. He is officially ranked 16th in the nation and is listed as first alternate, but Nancy was notified that one of the other horses above him will not be going, so he has now been officially invited. Trained and ridden by Ulla Parker, Sabati qualified with a score of 7.713, and this will be the third time in a row that Sabati has been invited to these Championships! One of Sabati’s main rivals also just received an invitation for Lamplight. The Oldenburg gelding, Suntreader (Sandro Hit x Rivage (Rubirando)) bred and owned by Pamela Erdman of Stone Mountain, Georgia won the FEI/USEF TOC YH at the April Vada/NOVA Dressage Show with a score of 7.820 under Inga Janke. With that win, his qualification score rose to 7.640 which ranked him 19th nationally, and as 4th alternate they were in good shape to receive the invitation which just arrived. So congratulations to all! We wish everyone a safe trip and lots of luck at the Championships!

The Oldenburg stallions De Champ and Fürstenball made a HUGE comeback in the small finals of the World Championships for the Young Dressage Horses in Verden, Germany!! De Champ won the small finals scoring an astounding 9.14 and Fürstenball was just behind him with a 8.98! Hats off as well to Marne Martin Tucker and her Oldenburg mare, Royal Coeur. The two looked great in the small finals for the 6 year old dressage horses, and although there were a few fleeting moments that didn't go totally as planned, it was clear to anyone watching that this pair will be extremely tough to beat when they get a little more experience under their belts. Not bad at all for a debut for both of them on the world stage. We are sure it won't be the last time we see them there! A congratulatory note as well to Ann Kitchell of Huntington Farm in Vermont. The Oldenburg stallion that she bred, Don Massimo, was 10th in the qualifying round for the 6 year old dressage horses. Unfortunately, the wind was horrible on the day of the large finals, so he didn't show off what everyone could see in the qualifying round, but he is for certain another top horse bred by Ann! At the end of the month, the Oldenburg Elite Foal auction will take place in Vechta, Germany. This is the auction where Fürstenball was discovered and purchased by his current owner. This year, top foals from sires such as Totilas, De Niro, Fidertanz, Don Schufro, and Fürstenball, not to mention jumpers like Nabab de Reve, Montender, Lord Z, and Stalypso will be offered, so don't miss it! In 2010, Rolling Stone Farm had an unprecedented 22 out of 24 foals awarded with the Premium title by Ullrich Henschke and Dr. Andre' Hahn of the Oldenburg Verband. Herr Henschke, who has been serving as a member of the Oldenburg Evaluation and Approval Committee in Germany for over 5 years commented that this was an extraordinary percentage of Premiums even for Germany, and that he was highly impressed with the quality of breeding at Rolling Stone Farm which is owned and operated by Mo and Jim Swanson. These comments were backed up very well at the recent Windy Hollow Hunt June Dressage and Breed Show held in New Jersey. Two fillies out of that outstanding 2010 group of foals bred by Rolling Stone were highly scored and awarded by "S" judge, Arlene Rigdon. Shayonara (Shakespeare RSF x EM Whitney Q (Weltbekannt)) now owned by Ellen Kvinta Palmisano of Connecticut, won the Yearling Fillies Class, and went on to be named Filly Champion and Young Horse Champion with an excellent score of 83.3%! Sharon Will of "Relatively Stable" in Ocala, Florida is elated at how well her 8 year old Oldenburg mare Absolute Liberty is doing as she moves up into the Advanced Level of Eventing and takes on the tough CCI3* courses with style! At the Bromont CCI3* in Quebec, Canada, June 9-12, Buck and "Libby" finished 4th overall out of a huge division of world class riders and horses! Sharon reports that they had a few time penalties, but show jumped clean to move up into the fourth place. Ealier in May, Libby also did exceptionally well with Buck in one of her first CIC3* competitions at the Jersey Fresh Three-Day Event. The pair placed 7th overall after having a clean cross country jump with some time penalties due to Buck's concerns about the footing and wanting to be conservative with the young mare. It was an excellent result and gave Libby the confidence to move onwards and upwards! Sharon bred Libby who is sired by the Oldenburg Approved, New Zealand stallion, Aberjack (Aberlou xx x Miss Charlie (Ranger)) who was ridden by Olympic rider, Mark Todd to great success at the upper levels of eventing. Libby is out of Sharon's CCI1* Thoroughbred and Oldenburg Main Mare Book mare, Chestnut Lady (Briartric xx x Pebble Peach xx (Stonewalk xx)). Sharon remembers, "Unfortunately, two weeks after birth Libby got very ill, and almost did not make it. Chesnut Lady or "Flair" could not have produced a more beautiful foal so I nursed her back to health." Sharon describes how much she loved riding Libby as a young horse, "Libby learned very quickly, but I realized she did not want to do dressage only. We introduced the jumps, and she showed a lot of talent for it with great coordination and power." Buck and Libby will be headed for the Millbrook Horse Trials in New York from August 4th to the 7th, and then to the Richland Park Horse Trials in Detroit to compete in the CCI2* dressage and Advanced cross country and show jumping. Coming along behind Libby is her younger half-brother also bred and owned by Sharon, No More Rocks (Noble Champion x Chestnut Lady xx (Briartric xx)), who has also been doing exceptionally well under Buck. The 6 year old gelding won the Open Preliminary A at the Fair Hill International Horse Trials, and was 2nd in the 3-Day CCI1*at the Ocala Horse Properties International! So again, a huge congratulations to Sharon, Buck and their whole team!! Best of luck in the upcoming events!

Juliana Whittenburg and Gary Ellebracht are thrilled with the results of their 2011 foals at the Orlando Dressage and Silver Sands Dressage Club's Surf's Up Cup held last weekend in New Smyrna Beach, Florida! They presented two Weser-Ems foals who were super. Their filly, Superstitious FLF (Pablito x Skippin Jackie (Skippin Reed)) who was only one month old, scored very well in the 2011 Fillies class with a 75.6. The Weser-Ems colt, Bonofacio FLF (Highlife's Burberry x Courtash Kotton Candy (Courtash Karnival)), was rewarded with the exceptional score of 78.6 in the open 2011 Colts class which earned him a 2nd place! Bonofacio FLF is the first colt sired by Highlife's Burberry bred by Highlife Farms in Orlando, and owned by Heather Luing of Whispered Wish Weser-Ems in Ocala, Florida. Burberry is the first US bred Weser-Ems German Riding Pony to be licensed in North America. Bonofacio FLF's dam is the Anglo Welsh pony Courtash Kotton Candy who has produced four Premium Weser-Ems foals. Juliana and Gary also presented the Oldenburg colt, Pantaleone FLF (Pablito x Passadena W (Polany)) who impressed the judges enough to rewarded him with an outstanding 80.0 which was the winning score for the class! Pantaleone FLF's sire is the Oldenburg approved Elite Hanoverian stallion, Pablito (Pablo x Amsella (Arsenik)) owned by Susan and Edgar Schutte of Rainbow Equus Meadows in California. This show was the first "Surf's Up Cup" held in New Smyrna, and it was an official qualifying competition for the GAIG/USDF 2011 Regional Championships. Both Bonofacio FLF and Pantaleone FLF were awarded with GAIG/USDF sashes for having qualified for the Southeastern Regional Finals. The judge was Mrs. Liselette Fore who is an S rated judge from California. So a big congratulations to Juliana and Gary! Keep up the great work! Both of these colts are for sale. ![]() Sanibelle & Jeanne Karver |
Report by Jeanne Karver from the NC Dressage & Combined Training Assoc.: Sanibelle, owned by Susan Craft of Elon, was honored with an invitation to attend the Eastern Young Horse Training Session with national coach Scott Hassler this past April. As one of ten horses aged 4-6, Sanibelle was the only North Carolina representative. The 5-year old mare was bred by Louise Rascoe of Bahama, NC, who stands the German Riding Pony stallion, Sweet Rock Solid. Sanibelle (Sir Donnerhall x Lunar Wind (Loerke)) was raised since weaning by Craft and started under saddle by Jeanne Karver of Summerfield. The training session was held at Riveredge, the amazing facility in Chesapeake City, MD where Scott and his wife Suzanne are based. It is an "equine castle" still under construction, sitting on over 500 acres. Future plans include shows and educational events as well as regular daily dressage training from the Hasslers. The riders and owners of the young horses stayed in the guest houses at Riveredge. The horses stayed in the luxurious guest wing of the main barn. The details of the vast place are not easy to simplify. Pictures are worth a thousand words, and yet still do not capture the feel, the innovation, and the outstanding atmosphere of the place. ...Owners of developing young horses who submitted a letter of intent (for the FEI Young Horse Program) and applied for the training session were invited based on application criteria and previous dressage performance results. During the training sessions, Sanibelle received many positive comments from Hassler and a "keep it real" mentorship for training and competitive guidance. Hassler commented on Sanibelle's trot work as some of the best quality he had seen this year. Ealier this year, Sanibelle's progress was slowed due to an accident Karver suffered in February, and she had been back in the saddle less than two weeks before they left for the Maryland training session. Sanibelle was a true lady, and took the sudden 0-60 mph jump in stride, as though she understood the honor of being allowed to participate. Now back on the other side of the tall bridge, they made it home safe, tired, and inspired. For more information on the USEF Young Horse Program opportunities, visit www.usef.org.

Two North American OHBS breeders have just been bestowed with the great honor of having the mares they bred and own be invited to the most prestigious Oldenburg mare show in Germany! Nancy Holowesko of Crosiadore Farm in Maryland, and Ann Kitchel of Huntington Farm in Vermont will be sending their mares to the historic grounds of the Royal Stud of the Graf Anton Gunther von Oldenburg in Rastede, Germany to the Oldenburg Elite Mare Show to be held on July 21st, 2011. Out of hundreds of 3 and 4 year old mares that are inspected by the Oldenburg Verband in Germany every year, only a select group are invited to go on to the Mare Performance Test. Out of those mares, around 100 are awarded the States Premium Candidate title, and then out of these States Premium Candidates, approximately 60 are invited to the Mare Show in Rastede. These figures can obviously vary from year to year based on the quality of the mares presented, and this year 55 have been invited. Once in Rastede, the mares are presented in hand on the triangle to the judging committee. Approximately 15 (judges discretion) will be invited to what is called the "Brilliant Ring" where each mare is trotted in hand into the main stadium of the grounds, and then they are all asked to walk in a large circle around the judges who then rank the top 10 and name the Champion. Remarkably, Nancy's mare, Solar Eclipse, was bred and born in the United States at Crosiadore Farm. Nancy shipped the now three year old over to Germany this past winter to be started by Johannes Westendarp. Solar Eclipse is sired by Sir Donnerhall (Sandro Hit x Contenance by Donnerhall) and out of Eclipse (Espri x Lagostina by Lemon xx). As a filly, Solar Eclipse was awarded the Alain Seheut Award by the Oldenburg Horse Breeders' Society for being the most outstanding foal of the 2008 North American Inspection season. In the Mare Performance Test held in Germany in early June, she was awarded excellent scores including a 9.5 for her canter, and was given the States Premium Candidate title! Ann Kitchel on the other hand, has for years kept one foot in Germany and the other in the US. She has her own breeding facility and farm in Vermont, and keeps a few mares with Andrea and Clemens v. Merveldt at their breeding and training stables, Gut Füchtel in Vechta, Germany. Ann has had tremendous success with her breeding program having bred the Bundeschampionate bronze medalist and price record breaking stallion, Statesman OLD (Stedinger x St.Pr.St. Weissendra by Donnerschwee) and the top priced auction foal, Future Star (Floriscount x Frieda by Dormello). Just recently, another stallion that Ann bred, Don Massimo (Don Larino x St.Pr.St. Little Star by Santander H) won the 6 year old tests at the CDN Zandhoven, the CDN Schilde, the CDN Flemalle, and made it a quadrouple win at the CDN Herentals in Belgium! This essentially secured him a spot to represent Belgium at the World Championships for the Young Horses in Verden with his rider Larissa Pauluis! Amazingly, Ann had three mares invited to the Mare Performance Test where they were presented by Andrea and Clemens. Don Massimo's half sister, Little Sue (Dimaggio x St.Pr.St. Little Star by Santander H) was awarded the States Premium Candidate title, and Statesman's half sister, Westend (Status Quo x St.Pr.St. Weissandra by Donnerschwee) was awarded the Verband Premium title. Ann's third mare, Roundabout (Fidertanz x Rudonja by Don Schufro) not only was awarded the State Premium Candidate title, but was also invited to compete at Rastede! So we send out a huge congratulations to both Nancy and Ann, and we'll keep our thumbs pressed and fingers crossed for Rastede! Stay tuned for full coverage of that event on July 21st!

The Markel USEF Young Horse Selection Trials went very well for the OHBS members and their Oldenburg horses! At the Western Trials held at Dressage at Flintridge and the Eastern Trials held at Morven Park in Leesburg, Virginia, Oldenburgs were at the top of the rankings! At the Eastern Trials in the 6 year old Dressage Horse division, Somerhall and Sabati were third and fourth overall with great scores! The Oldenburg mare, Somerhall (Sir Donnerhall x Arantscha B (Archipel)), bred by Theo Berkemeier, was ridden by her owner, Ashley Wimmer. The pair were second in the Preliminary test and then third in the Final Test resulting in a super average score of 7.708 and third overall. Ashley imported Somerhall from Germany as a 3 year old, and has done most of the training herself very successfully. In 2009, the pair were 2nd in the USEF 4 year old class at Dressage at Devon, and they went on to be 3rd in the FEI 5 year old Eastern Selection Trials and 10th in the Markel/USEF National 5 year old Finals in 2010. Sabati (Sandro Hit x Rosalea (Rubinstein I)) bred and owned by Nancy Holowesko of Crosiadore Farms was ridden by Ulla Parker to a fourth place finish in both tests resulting in an average score of 7.676 and a fourth place overall. Sabati also had a fantastic year in 2010 ending up 7th in the Markel/USEF National Finals for the 5 year olds. In the 5 year old Dressage Horse Division, Biscaya was the Reserve Champion with Folkestone just a hair behind in third, and De Feiner Star in fourth! Biscaya (Johnson x Audrey (Argentinus)) was bred by and was purchased by Nancy Holowesko at the 2006 Oldenburg Fall Elite Auction as an Elite Foal. She imported her, Ulla got her started, and she was presented as a 4 year old to the Oldenburg breeding committee who gave her the Special Premium title with the highest Mare Performance Test scores given in 2010. Because of this, she earned the Graf Anton Gunther von Oldenburg award for being the champion mare for the 2010 inspection season. In these trials, Biscaya was second in the Preliminary test with an excellent 7.96 and was even better in the Final test with a score of 8.02 resulting in an average score of 7.996 and the Reserve Champion title!! Both of these scores are above the required 7.8 to qualify for the national finals, so if Biscaya is in the top 15 six year olds in the country she will be invited to compete at the Markel USEF National Finals to be held at the Lamplight Equestrian Center on August 25-28. Folkestone (Fidertanz x El.St. Katullika (Rubinstein I)) bred by Rosemarie Boets was one of the stars of the 2010 Spring Elite Auction where he impressed everyone with his expressive movement, elasticity, and exceptional character. Christina Vinios and her parents, Zachary and Lou, were thrilled when they won the bid for him. They imported him to Florida where Christina trained at first with Robert Dover, and then began working with Oded Shimoni when Robert had to focus on his duties as the national coach of Canada. At Morven Park, Christina and Folkestone were 3rd in the Preliminary test, and tied with Biscaya for second place in the Final test with the same, fantastic 8.02 resulting in an overall score of 7.932 and third place overall! De Feiner Star (De Laurentis x Feiner Dance (Feiner Stern)) bred by Angela Barilar and owned by Greg Strait and Melinda Brown also did exceptionally well in the 5 year old division with his trainer and rider Christopher Schruefer. He was a very close fourth in the Preliminary test and fourth in the Final test resulting in a great score of 7.656 and a fourth place overall. De Feiner Star was really a star in 2010 having won big at the Dressage at Devon breed show earning the Born in the USA Grand Championship and the Great American/USDF Breeder's Championship for Stallions. Last but not least at the East Coast Trials, Marmara was second and Whellington was third in the USEF Test for 4 year old Horses! The Oldenburg mare, Marmara (Licotus x La Montana (Landadel)) bred by Erich Saathoff was purchased by Nancy Holowesko of Crosiadore Farms at the 2007 Oldenburg Elite Foal Auction. Nancy's trainer, Ulla Parker got her started under saddle and at Morven the pair were second place! Mo Swanson of Rolling Stone farm reports that Whellington (Welcome S x Anika (Archipel)) was great at Morven Park, especially considering this was only his third time in the dressage arena and his second show! Mo's trainer and rider, John Lee Amber, did very well with the young gelding who is sure to have a great future. Of course Mo and her husband Jim are also over the moon about the huge win of Somer Hit who is out of their fourth generation of breeding, and who earned a qualifying score to go to Verden, Germany for the World Championships. Somer Hit is sired by the Oldenburg stallion, Sandro Hit, but he is registered Hanoverian. We send them a big congratulations anyway! At the Western Trials in Flintridge, the 6 year old Champion was the Oldenburg, Sir Deauville (Sir Donnerhall x Estella) bred by Karl-Heinz Drees and owned and ridden by Sherry Van't Riet! The Reserve Champion was also an Oldenburg, Soleil (Sunny Boy x Ricoletta) bred by Werner Martens Achternhoff and owned and ridden by Bekki Vrono. So a huge congratulations to all of these fantastic horses and their breeders, owners and riders!! We will be pressing our thumbs and crossing our fingers for the best of luck in the National Finals to be held in August for those who are qualified!

The pair earned an outstanding score of 70.345% in the First Level Test 1 Open, and Nancy reports that she received two 9's for her extended trot! Biscaya not only earned the Special Premium Title, and won her MPT in 2010, she was also named the top mare for the entire 2010 inspection tour having earned exceptional scores! Be sure to visit the "Premium" page which you can find under "Awards". Ulla also had great results on Nancy's six year old gelding, Sabati (Sandro Hit x Rosalea (Rubinstein I)) who was second on both Saturday and Sunday with excellent scores in the FEI/USEF Test of Choice Young Horse. Riding the 6 year old test, the pair earned a 74.200% on Saturday and a 76.400% on Sunday! The only horse Sabati and Ulla were second to was their rival from last year's five year old classes, the Oldenburg gelding, Suntreader (Sandro Hit x Rivage (Rubirando)), bred and owned by Pamela Erdman of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Trained and ridden by Inga Janke who recently joined the High Pont Hanoverian team, Suntreader won the FEI/USEF TOC YH tests scoring a remarkable 76.800% on Saturday and a 78.200% on Sunday! We congratulate them all, and look forward to more from these great young horses!!

![]() 4 year old Champion Cleo ![]() 3 year old Champion with Josef Kathmann Photos by Maximilian Schreiner | April 11, 2011 - The 2011 Free Jumping Day in Vechta Has Two Outstanding Champions Every year the German Oldenburg Verband holds a "Free Jumping Day" which serves two purposes. It is a competition for 3 and 4 year old jumpers whose breeders and owners wish to show off their talents, and it is a great place for buyers to come and do some shopping. It is not an auction, and the Verband does not charge any commissions. It is simply up to the buyer and seller to talk and negotiate amongst themselves. This year it was Cleo (Concetto x Quisa (Quinto)) who won the 4 year old jumpers with a 9.0 for her manner and technique as well as for ability! Cleo was bred and is owned by Hermann Hukelmann of Werlte, Germany. In second place, was the very elastic daughter of Charming Boy who is out of a Lando x Sandro mare. She was bred and is owned by Otto Langemeyer of Visbek, Germany. Her quick reflexes were duly awarded by the judges. Third place in the 4 year olds was a chestnut French bred mare sired by Clearway and out of a Totoche du Bann x Joue de Metz mare. She was bred and is owned by Michaela Moeller of Havekost, Germany. In the Three Year Old category, the champion was a dark brown stallion who won easily clearing the fences with a faultless performance. He was so impressive the judges awarded him a very rare perfect score of 10.0 overall! He is sired by Quality and is out of a Cordalme mare. He was bred by Willehard Dumstorff and is owned by Josef Kathmann of Hausstette, Germany. Second place was another outstanding young stallion sired by Recardo Brillant and out of a Couleur Rubin mare. Having been bred and owned by Diedrich Fick, the stallion reminded everyone in his style of his grandfather, Couleur Rubin. Third place went to the mare, Spezial In who is sired by Check-In and is out of a Quick Nick x Argentinus mare. She was bred by Alois Pott zur Lage and is owned by the stables of Johanning-Moellerhaus in Loeningen.

Photo: Randi Muster Mustphoto.com | April 11, 2011 - G&C Farms' LaGran and Simply the Best Excel in the Final Weeks of the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival Jennifer Wood Media reports that Pablo Barrios who rides for G&C Farms of Venezuela and Wellington, Florida was on a roll in the final weeks of the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida. The farm has prospered in Wellington and Mirabal is excited to continue this year's show season." Two of the horses that were a part of this success were the Oldenburg gelding, G&C LaGran and the young Oldenburg mare, Simply The Best. G&C LaGran (Lancer II x Wiadora (Grannus)) was ridden by Barrios in the 2010 World Equestrian Games where the pair finished 2nd in the opening speed class, and finished 29th overall. At the Winter Equestrian Festival, the pair was second in the $31,000 G&C FEI 1.45m Classic and 5th in the $6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m Jumpers in week 10 of the Festival. Photo: Tammo Ernst ![]() Torbay and Burssens Table ![]() Jason Canton and Julia Martin ![]() Jason & Julia with #2 Supremat Bjoern Cordes, Jett Martin & Holly Weiland | April 2, 2011 - Sir Donnerhall II, Don Royal, Rousseau's Topas, and Supremat are the Top Sellers at the 74th Spring Elite Auction The Oldenburg Spring Elite Auction was a fantastic start to the year with the average price of the horses being 37,795 Euro which is 10,000 Euro higher than last year! The top horse was of course the remarkable Sir Donnerhall II who sold to Nyreröd Dressage of Sweden, but he was not the only one who was a stand out. Camil Torbay of Venezuela was thrilled when he won the bid for the FEI master, Don Royal, for his daughter Beatriz! The third top priced horse was Rousseau's Topas sired by Harmony's Rousseau who stands at Hassler Dressage in Maryland, and a very exciting stallion, #2 Supremat, will be headed to Atlanta, Georgia thanks to Jason Canton and Julia Martin! Click here to see the highlights video showing Sir Donnerhall II, Don Royal, and Supremat. Sir Donnerhall II was of course closely watched by everyone, not only because of how successful his older brother has been as a sire, but also because of his own success, and how fantastic his first foals have been. SD II was the Oldenburg State Champion in 2009, and went on to be a finalist in the 2009 Bundeschampionate. The bidding came down to a duel between the Nyreröd group and Camil Torbay of Venezuela. Camil has often accompanied Patrick Burssens of the International Dressage Academy in Wellington, Florida to the auctions over the past couple of years. Together, they have bought many wonderful horses at the auctions for themselves and happy clients. However, in the end, the Swedish group won the bid, and they will be taking him back to Sweden to stand as a stallion and keep him in dressage training. The Torbays were not deterred, however. Camil's daughter, Beatriz, clearly had her heart set on the wonderful FEI 11 year old gelding, #9 Don Royal, who is ready to go Grand Prix, and looked as if doing one tempis is as easy as could be! She was elated as the auctioneer and auction director, Uwe Heckmann, came over and knocked the hammer down in their favor. They will be shipping the gelding back to Florida right away for Beatriz to ride. The Torbay's also purchased the young stallion, #36 Don Fredo (Don Frederico x Kordula (Pik Bube)) who has wonderful gaits including a truly outstanding walk. They then filled up the airline container with a fantastic young jumper, #23 Chamonix (Charming Boy x H.W.'s Caciva (Cento)). Patrick and his wife, Marisol, were also successful in their bidding. They bought the wonderful gray Weser-Ems pony, #24 Nils (Nuts x El.St. Pamela (Magister)). Patrick and Marisol were not able to see the people bidding against them for Nils, so they didn't know that it was a little girl with her father. Everytime the bid went back to them, the little girl egged her father on with the help of all of the people in the stands who could see them. In the end there were tears, but we are all certain that they will find a great pony for her very soon! Click here to see the video of #24 Nils. The Burssens also helped a client of theirs from Michigan purchase #46 Hotaro (Hotline x World Lady (Welt Hit II)). Val Noblet was equally thrilled with the gelding who she will be riding in the dressage shows with! #3 Rousseau's Topas received a great deal of attention from the start due to his success in the show ring. The 6 year old stallion has won many classes including twice at M/B which is equivilant to 3rd Level in the US. He is sired by the Dutch stallion, Rousseau (Ferro x Zsuzsa (Roemer), owned by Harmany Sporthorses and standing in Maryland at Hassler Dressage. Rousseau's Topas is out of the mare Teerose (Rohdiamant x Katinka (Karon)). He was sold to a Belgian dressage rider. Click here for the video of Rousseau's Topas. In their first trip to an Oldenburg auction, the Grand Prix rider and trainer, Jason Canton, along with his partner and fellow dressage rider, Julia Martin had a wonderful time in Vechta, and were very happy winning the bid for the outstanding stallion, #2 Supremat! Supremat is sired by the legendary Sandro Hit and is out of the Elite Oldenburg mare, Granada (Rubinstein I x St.Pr./El.St. Graefin (Feingau)). In the press conference following the auction, Uwe Heckmann, said that if this stallion had been a year older, he would have been the top horse in the auction. Everyone agreed including Stallion Licensing Committee member, Evelin Schlotmann, who went out of her way to tell Jason and Julia what an outstanding stallion she though Supremat was. Supremat is licensed, and will stay in Germany with Johannes Westendarp to be prepared for his 70 day Stallion Performance Test. After that, Jason and Julia will import him to the US for Jason to train and compete. Jason has been very successful in the past, most recently with the outstanding dressage horse, Grandioso, who Jason competed in Germany, placing 2nd out of an elite group of German riders such as Ulf Moeller. The pair earned an outstanding overall score in the 6 year old dressage horses of 8.0, a very difficult score to acheive in Germany. Jason and Grandioso went on to win in the Developing Horse classes and Intermediare I before Jason sold Grandioso to Cesar Parra. There were more Americans on hand too. A very happy Holly Weiland was successful in winning the bid to buy #22 Lord Carolus (Lordanos x Caroline (Carolus)) for her daughter, Jett Martin, as a graduation present. Jett owns and shows a horse by the name of Carolus, so this young horse caught their attention first because of his name, but then as they watched him go and Jett rode him, they fell in love. Lord Carolus has won at M level in Germany and has many placings in young jumper classes. Jett has trained in Germany with international jumper rider and stallion owner, Gilbert Böckmann, so this will for sure be a great pair for the future! Click here to see the training videos of #22 Another fantastic jumper that will be headed across the Atlantic to New York is the mare, #34, Baltic Sun (Balou du Rouet x Scarlett K (Sandro Song)). Debra Wiedmaier of DW Dressage LLC was on hand in Vechta, to help her clients purchase the beautiful mare who stems from an excellent mare line. Her dam, Scarlett K, is a half sister of the international jumper Sundance K ridden by Franke Sloothaak, and her granddam, Goldika is the dam of the licensed stallion, Sandro Star. Click here to see the video of Baltic Sun. Amy Swerdlin of Palm Beach Equine Clinic in Palm Beach, Florida was thrilled when Holly Simensen helped her buy #43 Scholastica (Sir Donnerhall I x Loni (Lord Sinclair I)), the full sister to the approved stallion and top auction horse, Lux Dressage's Sonnenreiter. Holly had some trouble with the telephone connection, and took a small risk in making the last bid for Amy without being able to talk to her, but in the end it was worth it, because Amy was extremely happy! Click here to see the video of #43 Scholastica. In the end, President Weerda and Uwe Heckmann were both very happy with the results of the auction. The average price was very good for the horses which reflects the excellent quality. They both took note of the higher demand for the horses that had more training and show experience, and said they would focus on that for upcoming auctions, especially for the jumpers. So be sure not to miss the Summer auction which will be held on June 4th! The total earnings from the 39 horses was 1,474,000 Euro. Click here to see the full results.
